Horden were forced to make a number of changes from Tuesday night’s home defeat to North Shields. Both forwards Anthony Hume and Anthony Davies were unavailable, out injured was central defender Lee Armes, returning to opening line up was Mark Robinson and debuts for recent signings Peter Twidale and Jack Sharples who both played in midfield on what was a sunny afternoon in East Yorkshire.
The game hinged on a 59th minute incident with the score at 2-1 to Bridlington, Colliers keeper Grant Herbert raced out of his goal to close down a through ball that the hosts centre forward Craig Burdick was chasing at great speed, Herbert was first to the ball on the edge of his box though lost his bearings and handled, really unlucky for the youngster making his personal FA Cup debut. The assistant linesman flagged for the referee’s attention and everyone knew the outcome as Herbert was sent off.
Horden immediately made a substitution, taking off Peter Twidale and replacing him with goal keeper Christopher Rookes. Though Rookes’s first touch of the ball was to pick it out of the net, Ash Allanson scoring direct from the twice taken direct resultant free kick from where Herbert had handled.
Two minutes later and the Colliers were 4-1 down, this due to in-decision in the defence that allowed Craig Hogg with space to lob the advancing Rookes. Allanson got his second and Bridlington’s fifth in the 80th minute with a fabulous 25 yard strike after some good build up play. Though Rookes did magnificently stop a sixth goal some six minutes later, once again the Colliers defence was at 6’s and 7’s with themselves that allowed Nathan Cook with space whose lob was from just inside the box was brilliantly pushed clear of what was a goal bound strike.
The game had started in blazing sunshine and it was clear just what a good side the hosts were, playing football from the back through the midfield and down both wings. Alex Rhodes particularly in the 1st half tormented the Colliers down the left flank, we saw this first in the 2nd minute when it needed a last ditch tackle from Liam Anderson to stop Rhodes from advancing further into the box, though Anderson was out done on many occasions in the opening half hour before being injured and then replaced by Harry Taylor in the 33rd minute who had an excellent game at left back.
Horden’s first chance came in the 5th minute, a free kick taken from the left and 30 yards out by Danny Reeves floated in to captain for the day Danny Parker on the right though it appeared Parker had been blinded by the sun and he could only nudge forward the ball for which their centre half was under pressure and he lashed out to fire the ball out just missing the left hand post.
The persistent hosts got their reward in the 16th minute with a stroke of luck, a throw in was adjudged to be the hosts rather than the Colliers, this deep inside the Horden area which was picked up by Rhodes and his cross to the far post was nudged home by Wayne Wallace. Ten minutes later and Bridlington were 2 up, fantastic build up play stretched the Colliers to the hilt and accumulated with Tom Fleming splitting the Horden defence to find the unmarked Craig Burdick whom slotted home at the far post.
At this point it was all one way traffic though Horden did stun their hosts pulling a goal back in the 33rd minute in what was a well worked move. Jack Sharples who had an excellent 1st half beat two players in the centre of the park and laid the ball out to the right which Mark Robinson chased and won then lost and re-won then passed to Kevin Boddy who laid the ball square to Peter Twidale who was unmarked at the far post and he slotted home to give the Colliers hope.
Though a minute earlier the Colliers had to thank keeper Herbert who brilliantly pushed over Flemings close range over head kick in what had been simply breath taking Bridlington move involving a number of players.
Final Score – Bridlington Town 5 Horden Colliery Welfare 1 (half time 2-1)
