A frantic start to the game with Horden possibly having the best of the tussles. After a spell of excellent passing in the 10th min Sean Joseph spun the ball wide for Hordens’ first chance of many. Marske took the only opportunity that came to them and in the 15th minute slack marking led to Thompson controlling the ball and firing past James Winter in style, 1-0 Marske. The remainder of the first half was end to end with Horden playing good football but finding it hard to make the ball stick in the final third; repeated attacks breaking down before the chance to shoot came. After the break Marske defended well in numbers to keep their lead, Horden worked hard and created opportunities, Marske's keeper kept the score as it was on more than one occasion. In the 50th min Craig Ellison forced a great save with his shot from a free kick, Darren Atkinson hitting his shot at the keeper in the 86th minute. Just when it seemed it was all over bar the singing Mark Atkinson whipped in a great ball from the left and ever the opportunist Mark Stephenson rose to get the goal Horden so needed, and deserved, in the 91st min.
Horden must now show the same determination and a little more finesse and composure in front of goal on Wednesday night in the replay. Winners on Wednesday will face Jarrow Roofing on 15th September in the next round.
